More than $25 million goes to opportunities for students, resources, research and real-world initiatives

Carleton University is celebrating its best single year of fundraising, with more than $25 million in donations raised for student aid, new programs, research and initiatives that tackle major community challenges and enhance our world.

The total for the 2014-’15 fiscal year is almost 20 per cent more than Carleton’s previous best year in 2001-‘02 and includes some notable milestones, including:

  • Carleton staff, faculty and retirees donated more than ever before, at more than $875,000.
  • Support for men’s basketball reached a new high of more than $156,000.
  • Donations under $10,000 were up over $1.9 million, another record.
  • Donations over $1 million exceeded all expectations.

“I am so profoundly grateful to every donor who has contributed to supporting our students and to helping us achieve our goals of excellence in research and teaching,” said President Roseann O’Reilly Runte.

The university focuses donations on six main areas of endeavour – globalization, health, technology, entrepreneurship, sustainability and leadership. Donors are funding the future in very specific ways by targeting programs and projects that interest them and make an impact in the community.

Some make donations directly through Carleton’s crowdfunding website, where projects run the gamut from students studying abroad in Ghana and design innovations of final-year engineering students to increasing undergraduate bursaries and giving students hands-on experience in water collection in Tanzania.

The projects are continually updated at futurefunder.carleton.ca.

“At Carleton, our donors can collaborate with our faculty and students to address the challenges that mean the most to them,” said Jennifer Conley, chief advancement officer. “Whether it’s ground-breaking research or financial aid to help students cover the bills, they can decide how they can make the biggest impact.”

The single largest donation from outside the university came from the Wesley and Mary Nicol Charitable Foundation, which provided $10 million to fund a new building for Carleton’s acclaimed Sprott School of Business.

Sprott School of Business, named in 2001 for Eric Sprott, BCom/65, has outgrown its current facilities. A new building on campus will provide enhanced learning, networking and collaborative spaces for Sprott students, faculty and staff. A new facility will also permit the Sprott School to offer more executive and management training to business leaders.  In 2013, the school received its international accreditation, a designation earned by less than five per cent of the world’s business programs.

The unparalleled fundraising success this year builds significant momentum for Carleton’s soon-to-be-announced comprehensive fundraising campaign—a key component of the university’s five-year Strategic Integrated Plan.
