robotic.hand 600x400Carleton University’s Discovery Centre is holding Discovery Day, an eclectic showcase of activities that live up to the philosophy of learning through engagement, on Wednesday, March 16.

This event is free and open to the public, and media are invited to attend.

When: Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Where: Discovery Centre, Fourth Floor, MacOdrum Library, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive

The event will feature projects from community groups such as the Ottawa School of Art, Wabi-Sabi, Ottawa Valley Arts and Crafts Guilds and more. These are the featured showcases during Discovery Day:

3D Printing

  • The Discovery Centre’s 3D Print Clubwill host workshops that will teach you how to 3D print
  • Richard Dansereau, professor of Systems & Computer Engineering in the research-intensive Faculty of Engineering and Design, and his team of fourth year students will demonstrate their 3D-printed robotic arm.

Gaming

  • Professors Shawn Graham and Brian Greenspan will prove that technology and gaming have a role in teaching history.
  • The Discovery Centre’s Minecraft Clubwill unveil their model of Carleton’s campus and enlist you to help finish it off.

The Emerging Technology Library

  • Carleton’s Systems & Computer (SCE) society will make their second appearance with their banana-pianos and other toys to showcase the toys available from the Emerging Technology Library.
  • The Discovery Centre’s own Earle Estrella will explain the new world of 360 degree photography as well as demonstrate the teaching potential of the 80 inch interactive screenbeing housed at the Discovery Centre.

Guilds

Guilds still survive (outside of the Medieval History course) and they thrive here in Ottawa.

  • Kristof Avramsson of MacOdrum Library will show his wonderful sewing creations that bridge an “old-time” craft with new technology.
  • Join representatives from WabiSabi and the Ottawa Valley Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild.
  • Share in a knitting and loom showcase with the Ottawa Knitting Guild.

Arts in Education

  • A demonstration of PicassoBot, a product of a third year programming course in Systems & Computer Engineering.
  • See images take shape in other forms such as oil and acrylic painting by experienced artists.
  • Learn about soap making and wood burning

All maker communities of Carleton University and the Ottawa community are invited to participate and to attend.
